Eddie Palmer
  Eddie Palmer:
  Scottish Badger Chairman
Eddie is a trustee of Scottish Badgers, the body working for protection and conservation of badgers in Scotland: www.scottishbadgers.org.uk

The work of Scottish Badgers is multifarious, and includes both regular surveying and monitoring of badger setts; wildlife crime prevention work with the Police and other agencies; and over the past three years, a superb survey by volunteers of badger activity in Scotland, organised by our Co-ordinator, Elaine Rainey. The final report was launched on 14 Nov. 2009 in Glasgow.

The main statistics are as follows:

  • 550 volunteers recruited for the survey
  • 44 training sessions carried out over Scotland
  • 877 1 km squares surveyed (target was 1,000)
  • Squares represented each geographical area of Scotland, and every habitat
  • 136 squares contained an active badger main sett
  • 288 squares had evidence of some sort of badger activity
  • An overall estimate for Scotland of badger setts is 9,000

Eddie is also involved in work with other mammals, such as hedgehogs, red squirrels, otters, and, more recently, beavers. The photo (below) of a tree felled by a beaver is within a mile of his home!
